Adidas unwilling to renew Arsenal ace £22m deal

Adidas has been sponsoring Mesut Ozil since his days as a Real Madrid player from 2013 but his lucrative contract is now coming to an end.

And Bild report Adidas have no plans of offering the 31-year-old an extension, with the decision thought to centre around concerns over his public image.

His relationship with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has caused controversy in the past, leading to criticism from human rights groups.

Ozil was pictured alongside Erdogan prior to the 2018 World Cup, after which he retired from international football, claiming he had been made a scapegoat for Germany's failure.

Last summer he also made Erdogan best man at his wedding.

Since then Ozil has been embroiled in a fresh row in China after criticising the nation's treatment of Uighur Muslims.

As a result China cancelled the proposed broadcast of Arsenal vs Man City, and Ozil was also removed from the Chinese version of video game Pro Evolution Soccer 2020.

His position at Arsenal has also looked increasingly insecure with his contract at The Emirates due to expire next summer.
